Downtown Denver

Our last few moments as full-time Denverites (sniff, sniff 🤧) @elfivedenver. Cheers Colorado for the adventure, jaw-dropping beauty, + IMAX-scale views! And to Denver for the best decade of our lives, esp to its denizens, “for what is a city but its people?” No matter where we are in the world, we’ll always call you home. #denverlove

Special thanks to Maxo of
@thewanderlustofyou a salt-of-the-earth kinda guy, whose big-hearted generosity, CAN-DO spirit, and brute strength 💪🏼pushed us over the moving marathon finish line. Looking forward to rendezvousing in Maine, Max, and taking you up on that glass of wine!

It's morning again. Another day, 'nother chance. (First thing we saw when we popped open our peepers. Seemed like a good omen.)

Great Sands National Park Colorado

There are sand dunes, + then there are SAND DUNES! Once upon a time, almost any hill would do, but the criteria have changed. Imagine the scene: You’re driving along in SE CO taking in the majesty of the 14,000 ft+ Sangre de Cristo Mts when all of a sudden massive sand dunes rise up 750 ft high—the tallest in N. America + twice as tall as the 32-floor high-rise I live in—out in the middle of nowhere.
.
What?! Sand in CO? I don’t know about you, but when I think of the Centennial State, images of sand dunes are not the first things that come to mind.
.
The scene is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Sorry to shout, but that’s just how it hits you. We oohed + aahed at the bold eyeful of sand + dazzling wide swath of dunes. A glory, glory hallelujah moment when one could not help but feel a stirring of wonder. And even though I saw it with my own eyes, it still seems surreal to me.
.
If you’ve ever wondered what it would feel like to travel in the Sahara, you can find out in these 39-sq miles of dunes. At the widest point, the main dune field runs 6 miles and at the longest, 8. The elev. w/in the park ranges from 7,520-13,604 ft.
.
Once you make it up + into the dune field (a Herculean effort in itself) where only sky + sand is visible from any direction, you get the idea that you’ve left somewhere + entered nowhere.
.
With sand that reaches up to 150 degrees in late summer + whips its way into every nook + cranny of your body (we Q–tipped it out of our ears for days), Star Dune proved to be one of our most calf-busting, challenging climbs to date. It’s more difficult than it appears. At 750 ft, it’s the tallest in N. America w/ an average round trip hiking time of 4 hrs. It took us longer. We broke no speed records.
.
Consider visiting in May when a roaring creek “appears” (yes, like a mirage) along the edge of the dunes w/ surges at times (highest at dawn) strong enough to ride.

Yellowstone National Park

Can bear-ly stand to wait till we leave for Yellowstone where my niece and nephew—both rangers at the park—snapped this grizzly last week, bear spray in one hand, camera in the other. 🐻

Denver Colorado

Our departure date to become full-time travelers is July 1, 2017! First stops: Yellowstone + Grand Teton Nat'l Parks. We’d be over the moon if you followed along on our uncharted path in a wild, new world. ✈️ 🚈🚗
